Abstract

At this time of rapid development and technology and global crisis, it is not surprising that time and cost are needed. One of the projects that requires the achievement of targets is mining. Mines generally require units such as Bulldozers, Off-Highway Trucks, Articulated Dump Trucks, Excavators, Motor Graders, Compactors, Drill Pumps and others to carry out their projects. All of these units use the same engine as the main propulsion system. One aspect that can affect the performance of an engine is the application of a turbocharger as a power enhancer. If a few years ago turbochargers could only be found in certain engines, now we almost always encounter engines that use a turbocharger along with an aftercooler in the air system. Turbocharger Puts air so that there is an increase in pressure called boost pressure.

PT Pamapersada Nusantara (PAMA) sent one of their ship's engines (model C15) to PT Trakindo Utama for periodic repairs (general overhaul) after being operated for 12,000 working hours. In the division of tasks, engine repairs ranging from disassembly, assembly to dynotest are carried out at Trakindo Balikpapan. It is hoped that the engine after repairs will be able to operate properly with performance that meets the standard specifications set by Caterpillar.

The author made observations in the form of data collection during the testing process using the Taylor Dynamometer test tool for 1 hour 50 minutes. At full load, the boost pressure will reach its highest pressure of 24.4 Psi, resulting in a maximum power of 470 HP. The turbocharger performance of the C15 engine system complies with the specifications of Caterpillar (15-20%), as shown in the thermal efficiency price of 22%. Air density will tend to increase according to the increase in load from 1.118 kg/m3 at high idle to 1.57 kg/m3 because the exhaust gas pressure also increases.
